Nicole Tutrani spent her summer working with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) on a wide variety of legal issues, including general crimes, fraud, sexual assault, and domestic violence. NCIS prioritizes sexual assault and child pornography cases, and the majority of investigations were assigned to the sexual assault taskforce, to which Nicole was assigned. She was allowed to do what the Special Agents did as long as it would not require her to testify in court. Nicole worked closely with the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD) where sat in on interviews with women who were abused. Nicole also followed-up with subpoenas; analyzed the legality of searches and seizures; researched exceptions to the Fourth Amendment in a military setting; searched court and docket records at various courthouses for investigative purposes; analyzed sexual assault statutes under federal, state, and military law; and provided assistance to the agents in terms of statutory interpretation. During her time with NCIS, Nicole learned how to apply the law in real life scenarios.
