I was extremely fortunate and blessed to have a wonderful experience at the Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office over the course of the summer. For many years I’ve wanted to be a prosecutor and this was my first real exposure to what that would be like. Not only did I learn a lot but I also had a blast and loved being able to do it through the Center!
I was responsible for a daily docket (Traffic/DUIs), which consisted of going through each case that came through the office and prepping it for trial, disposition, etc. Part of my job was also to identify if there were any issues regarding searches and seizures or the stops that were conducted, etc. This was great because I had just completed Criminal Procedure, so it was fun to put what I learned in the classroom to use.
The most interesting part of what I got to do involved helping with a few cases on the domestic violence docket as well as helping with a case that involved a false claim of sexual assault of a minor. It was really interesting to be able to help with these types of cases because I do have a passion for these issues specifically but had never had the chance to actually work on them to know if I could handle dealing with them on a day-to-day basis. I really appreciated the opportunity to get involved in some of these cases! It helped me to solidify that this is an area that I truly do want to be in and feel called to.
